The Difference Between Virtual Reality and Real Life

The Difference Between Virtual Reality and Real Life The scrum around the stands at virtual reality exhibitions is regularly five deep. Even though ways of immersing people in simulated environments were introduced more than three decades ago, it was only last year that computer technology became cheap enough to encourage developers of VR systems to display their wares in public. Wild claims for this new form of mass entertainment quickly followed. It would, among other things, make sex both sa… Continue

Just Another Death?

Crossposted from Super Concepts. Page 9, somewhere in between another problem with public services and the latest celebrity gossip, is usually where I’ll find today’s horrific murder story. A teenager is brutally beaten and then “accidentally” killed when his attackers take it too far. They get a few months inside for man-slaughter; his family gets a lifetime of heartache. Consequently, the world balance between peaceful, loving, value creators an… Continue

Virtual Unreality

In the future, we may decide that a virtual existence, a life inside a fully immersive computer game where our every desire is fulfilled, is a more appealing option than the real world we currently inhabit. Many people have presented the idea that we are already in such a virtual reality, but I don’t believe this is possible. This is because virtual worlds provide us with many possibilities that the real world does not, so why have they not been “programmed” into the real world we know? Since t… Continue

Imagine

Imagine we learn to read human brains down to the most intricate details. Imagine we learn to record, in detail, every action that occurs within the brain, every synapse firing, every cell interaction, every memory. Imagine if all of this data could then be stored on a computer and used to re-engineer a new, identical brain. Imagine this brain could then be put into a new body, thus creating a new version of us when we die. Imagine we knew for a fact that there was nothing after death. Imagine w… Continue

Better Humans

Nanotechnology oversight: An agenda for the new administration

Few domestic policy areas that the new administration must address will have greater long-range consequences than nanotechnology -- a new technology that has been compared with the industrial revolution in terms of its impact on society. If the right Read more...(read more)

Penn Study Pinpoints New DNA Weapon Against Bird Flu

Avian InfluenzaA new way to vaccinate against avian influenza that tricks the immune system into mounting a broad response against multiple strains of the disease, including strains to which the immune system was never exposed, has been devised by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

In the experiments, vaccinated macaques, mice and ferrets were protected from both disease and death when exposed to avian flu.

If proven in humans, this research could lead the way to effectively prepare against an outbreak of pandemic avian flu.   Read More...

Chemists claim 1st almost all artificial DNA molecule

Japanese chemists say they have created the world's first DNA molecule made almost entirely of artificial parts, which could lead to improvements in gene therapy, nano-sized computers and other high-tech advances.

Scientists have tried for years to develop artificial versions of DNA in order to take advantage of its amazing information storage capabilities. Already, DNA has been used to create simple electronic circuits.

DNA uses just four basic building blocks, known as bases, to code proteins used in cell functioning and development. Other researchers have crafted DNA molecules with a few artificial parts.  Read More...

Animal rights protesters torment scientists

Animal Rights ActivistsIn the hills above the University of California's Berkeley campus, nine protesters gathered in front of the home of a toxicology professor, their faces covered with scarves and hoods despite the warm spring weather.

One scrawled "killer" in chalk on the scientist's doorstep, while another hurled insults through a bullhorn and announced, "Your neighbor kills animals!" Someone shattered a window.

Borrowing the kind of tactics used by anti-abortion demonstrators, animal rights activists are increasingly taking their rage straight to scientists' front doors.

The Methuselah Foundation Undergraduate Research Initiative

Are you an undergraduate interested in the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence and other avenues of longevity science? Have you considered volunteering with the Methuselah Foundation to help advances towards the repair of aging? Then you should visit the MFURI website to learn more about the Methuselah Foundation Undergraduate Research Initiative. From the program overview:

In its present form, the initiative provides students with the knowledge and logistical support to develop their own projects to further the agendas of the Methuselah Foundation, a non-profit organization which supports research and advocacy for radically extending healthy human life. As a means for promoting student interest, thousands of dollars in scholarship funds, grants, and man hours are provided annually. These support mechanisms, coupled with the logistical support of numerous dedicated, professional volunteer coordinators, provide unprecedented opportunity for student development and success in most any academic discipline. In addition to becoming eligible for scholarships and general support, MFURI students are also given the choice to perform projects and initiatives for university credit virtually anywhere within the United States.

Foundation volunteer and Director of Undergraduate Affairs Kelsey Moody adds:

We have opportunities for students of almost all academic backgrounds to contribute, and are also looking for qualified volunteers to help mediate and coordinate the students.

This is a great opportunity to get involved in researching the development of longevity medicine.
